“Why...Sucking Stones?"

While at the beach, Molloy, decrepit hero of Samuel Beckett’s 1951 novel, takes the opportunity to collect some stones to suck on his journey to visit his mother. He ponders and agonises over how best to distribute and circulate the 16 stones he collects among the 4 pockets of his overcoat and trousers to ensure that he sucks each one in turn. He works through various strategies and permutations, evaluating the trade-offs, to arrive at the ultimate rotational solution. Finally he loses interest in the problem, throws them all away but one, which he eventually loses or swallows.

At Sucking Stones, we recognise Molloy’s obsessive search for the perfect process. More than just a drink, beer has the power to change or amplify how we feel. It brings solace when we are down, and enhances joy and laughter when we celebrate. You can relish the complexity of each mouthful, or down a pint to slake your thirst. It can be as simple or as complex as you like, serious or frivolous. As brewers we obsess over it, seeking improvement with each brew, tending each fermentation until it is at its best. And thinking about the next brew from the moment we wake up. But the secret, deep joy of beer is that, despite all this, it’s just beer.
